Is this a dream or is it reality
By Tels

Jacob jerked awake as someone called his name. “What is it?” he asked. He hadn't been asleep more than three hours, having just got back from a mission and whoever it was had better have a good reason.

Malek looked at him. “I am sorry to wake you, but there is an urgent communiqué from Earth for you.” He paused. “Are you alright?”

Jacob rubbed a hand over his face. “Yeah… long day and a stupid dream.” He swung his feet off the bed and got up. Glancing down he realised eh was still dressed. He must have been shattered to not even have changed or showered first.

Following Malek through the tunnels, the dream ran through his mind again. He'd been walking Sam down the aisle. Her dress was white and lacy, her hair set with her mom's tiara and veil with diamante sequins. It had been the proudest moment of his life until he placed her hand into that of the groom. He shuddered at the thought. It was just so wrong.

“What was so wrong?” Malek asked.

Jacob looked at him. “I'm sorry?” he asked.

“You said it was just so wrong.”

“Ah,” Jacob hadn't realised he'd spoken aloud. “Just this dream I had. I dreamed Sam was getting married.”

Malek smiled. “And that was wrong?”

Jacob nodded. “She was marrying Jack O'Neill.”

Malek paused. “I see…”

“For one thing it'd ruin her career as he is her CO and for another… he is so not the right man for her. She needs someone more reliable, more…”

“Someone you'd approve off,” Malek said.

“Yeah, right.”

They reached the communications room. Jacob hit the console. “This is Jacob Carter.”

“Hey Dad it's Sam…”

“Hi honey… I was just thinking about you. How are you?” He wondered about the edge in her voice. Like when she was 6 and had broken the owl on his desk in the den and didn't know how to tell him.

There was a pause. “Ummm Dad, could you possibly come back to Earth for a few hours? I need to see you. I have something very important I need to talk to you about.” There was another pause. “Well we both do.”

Jacob's heart sank. “Sure honey… I'll be right there.” He looked at Malek. “Assuming that's okay…”

“Go.”

Jacob arrived on Earth five minutes later. <So help me if it's Jack O'Neill I will personally throttle him for daring to even think it.>

<Trust me Jacob, he's thought it. Remember the incident when Martouf was killed… Anise said then that they had feelings for each other…. Perhaps he's decided not to let them linger anymore…>

Jacob bristled at the thought. <He is NOT marrying my daughter!>

<She's a grown woman Jake… she doesn't need your permission anymore…>

Jacob found a smile for Sam as he walked down the ramp. “Hey Sammie,” he said pulling her into a hug. “What's up?”

She smiled awkwardly. “Ummm… come up to the General's office for a moment.”

Jacob noticed Jack standing in the control room and stared at him for a moment then followed Sam upstairs. “So…”

“I have someone I want to introduce…”

Jacob suddenly caught sight of her left hand. Grabbing it he lifted it too look at. “Sam…?” he asked.

“He's a good man Dad… I want you to meet him.”

“He's here?” He pulled her to one side for a moment. “In Jack's office I assume?”

Sam nodded. “Yeah… he proposed last night. We've been seeing each other on and off for two years, duties permitting. He's an officer in the Air Force too.”

Jacob took a deep breath. <If it's Jack…> he began.

Selmak thumped him hard. <Jacob look at the light in her eyes. She loves the guy whoever he is.>

<I don't care. Marrying Jack is too much.> “Do I know him?”

Sam nodded. “Yeah… he wants to ask you formally though.” She took his hand and led him up to Jack's office. She opened the door and smiled at the man standing by the desk.

Jacob watched her, noting the way her smile lit up her eyes. She deeply loved the guy. The last time he'd seen that smile was when his wife smiled at him. His gaze fell on the man at the desk. “Hello.” He held out a hand.

Paul Davis smiled nervously. He'd rather face a hoard of jaffa or the joint chiefs than do this. “General,” he said shaking Jacob's hand.

Sam smiled nervously. “I'll go get the coffee,” she said backing out and closing the door.

Jack looked at her. “Well…”

She did one of those I don't know faces and shrugged slightly.

Jack smiled. “Paul's a good man; your Dad will just want you to be happy.”

“I know.”

“And it's not like it's me asking permission now is it?”

Sam laughed. “I think he'd kill both of us Sir.”

Jack nodded. “Which would be why it's not me. Come on lets go get that coffee.”

Jacob fixed Paul with a serious look as he took a deep breath and asked for permission to marry Sam. Then he smiled. “She looks at you the way my wife looked at me. Of course you can marry her. Just look after her.”

Paul nodded. “I intend to Sir.”
