Malek stood on the cliff top. He could see them marching now, pushing forwards one step at a time. One in heart and mind, united by their common cause. And he could see them fall, left lying where they fell. Torn apart by the fire of the enemy, yet they continued on; the enemy playing with them as a cat plays with a mouse before killing it. The worst part was they knew they were fighting a cause they could never win, but they continued on anyway.
He closed his eyes for a moment, wanting to go and help but knowing if he did then the warning would never get back to the others. Just like the toy soldiers Jared played with as a child, they kept pushing forwards, fighting the unbeatable foe, for giving in meant they were dead. He got to his feet and keeping under cover ran for the gate, trying to block the sound of battle from his ears. He ran for if he fell or slowed he would meet the same fate as those he had left behind.
He tumbled through the gate and lay the other side for a moment, his heart pounding within him. Emptiness replacing the pain of grief and distress. He could deal with that later. Right now he had to warn the others. The storm was coming and there was going to be no stopping it. They would be as helpless to resist as. As he entered the tunnels Jacob caught up with him. “How did it go?”
Malek looked at him, only a hint of what he had seen in his eyes. “Toy soldiers,” he said grimly. “Start the evacuation.”
