Twenty two years he thought and the sound of wiper blades still made him think of that one day his life changed.

Jacob slammed the phone down. “Alison's gonna take a cab. Is it my fault I have to go to this damn meeting?”

George looked at him. “She cross?”

Jacob rolled his eyes. “Cross doesn't even begin to cover it. She told me I could have the sofa tonight.” He sighed. “I'd better go get it over with.” He gathered his files up and headed towards the door.

Twenty minutes later after the meeting was finished he was out of the door with George behind him. “Maybe we can catch her,” he said. The traffic however was terrible. The highway was totally jammed up and Jacob was getting more and more frustrated.

There was a cab at the lights opposite. The lights started to change and the cab moved off only to be broadsided by a lorry coming the other way. Time seemed to slow down. The screech of brakes, crunching of metal on metal and the scrape of the wipers on the windshield all etched into his brain as he watched the cab get thrown into the air, turn and land in a heap. He flipped on his hazard lights and jumped out of the car. “I gotta go help!” he shouted.

George followed, dialling 911 on his cell phone.

The cab was a mess of tangled wreckage. Jacob tried to open the door but couldn't. He could see someone in the back; it looked like a woman but was difficult to tell. He banged on the window and she moved her head to look at him. The bottom fell out of his world. “Alison!”
