Snow Fun
By Tels
The snow lay deeply round the cabin high up in the Colorado Mountains . Sam couldn't believe the amount of paperwork it had taken just to get Martouf out of the base but it had been worth it. Her father had driven them up to his cabin and given Martouf a stern father/boyfriend talk before he left, leaving him under no illusions what would happen to him if he hurt Sam in any way. He knew Jacob would make good on his threat but he had no intentions of hurting Samantha. She meant far too much to him and Lantash for either of them to do that.
Glancing round the cabin he noticed how warm it was despite the freezing temperatures outside. He put his bag down in one corner of the room.
Sam came over to him having put on the heater in the bedroom. “Bathroom is through there,” she said pointing back the way she had just come. “As is the bedroom.”
Martouf nodded. “I will be right back,” he told her.
Sam smiled at him and moved into the little kitchen and unpacked the few groceries they had brought with them. She had only been able to get clearance for two days. Her father was staying somewhere in the nearest town and was coming to pick them up the day after tomorrow. She pulled two mugs from the cupboard and filled the kettle.
Martouf came back into the kitchen and wrapped his arms around her. “That is better,” he whispered to her. “I have wanted to do this since arriving on your planet.”
Sam leaned back against him, wrapping her arms over his. “I think the Colonel might have had something to say if you had.”
Martouf nodded. “Not to mention your father.”
Sam laughed softly. “Dad? He's a teddy bear really. He's just looking out for me.”
“A teddy bear?” Martouf repeated. “Hmmm that term does not seem to apply to either Jacob or Selmak… I assume you are referring to a stuffed toy a child takes to bed?” He looked at Sam as she nodded. “Then it does not fit as I have no wish to take either of them to bed and neither of them are a stuffed toy.”
Sam laughed and turned to face him, hugging him tightly. She looked up into his blue eyes holding his gaze for a moment. She knew how she felt about him and was fairly sure she knew how he felt about her. “So… you ever played snowballs?” she asked him.
Martouf held her gaze. “What are snowballs?” he asked, ignoring Lantash's comment.
“I guess not. Well you need your jacket, hat, scarf and gloves,” Sam said wriggling out of his arms.
She led him outside and showed him how to roll the snow into a small ball.
Martouf watched her intently. “And then what?” he asked, seeing the connotation now between snow and ball but not understanding how game came into the equation.
Sam smiled innocently at him. “Then you do this,” she said and tossed the snowball at him, scoring a direct hit on his chest.
Martouf just stood there. He looked at her and then down at his chest. The snow was sticking to his jacket. “What was that for?” he asked.
Sam shook her head. “That's what you do. You make snowballs and throw them at people. The person with the most direct hits wins.” She bent down and picked up another handful of snow. “See,” she said tossing it at him. It hit his jacket again.
Martouf bent down and picked up a handful of snow. Quickly making it into a ball he tossed it towards Sam only to find her move out of the way. The ball landed harmlessly on the snow next to her. “You moved!” he complained.
Sam laughed. “I wasn't going to stand still,” she said tossing another one at Martouf. This time he sidestepped and her shot missed. She laughed again. “That's more like it.” She bent down to pick up some more snow.
Martouf quickly made a snowball and tossed it at her before she stood up.
The game progressed fast and furious, with Lantash and Martouf both ganging up on Sam, until both of them were out of breath from laughing and covered in snow. Lantash was by far the better shot and the fastest of the three. Sam looked at him and then lay down in the snow.
Martouf looked at her worriedly. “Are you hurt Samantha?” he asked running to her side.
Sam shook her head. She moved her arms and legs for a bit and then got up. “A snow angel,” she told him.
Martouf tilted his head to one side.
“You try.”
Lantash looked at her. “You want us to lie in the snow?” he asked.
Sam nodded. “It's traditional,” she explained. “Snowballs, snow angels and then snowmen.”
Lantash looked at her and then nodded. He lay down in the snow and moved his arms and legs in the manner that she had.
Getting up he looked at the angel he had made in the snow next to hers. Then he grabbed hold of her hand and pulled her close to him and kissed her soundly.
Sam automatically put her arms round him, kissing him back.
Lantash gave control back to Martouf mid kiss. Breaking for air he looked at her and smiled. “Now you know how we feel about you, please explain about snowmen.”
Sam smiled at him. “I feel the same way about you both,” she said. “I just wasn't sure if…”
“Your feelings were reciprocated?” Martouf asked. “They are. We care very much for you Samantha.” He ran a hand down her face. “We see you and you alone here. Not a memory of Jolinar before you ask.”
Sam blushed. “I…”
Martouf cut her off by kissing her, showing her just how much he and Lantash cared for her.
Sam didn't know how long they stood in the snow kissing and she really didn't care. All that mattered was the man she loved felt the same way about her. Finally he pulled back slightly and smiled at her. “Now please explain about snow men?”
Sam nodded and started to explain.
Martouf listened carefully and then watched as she started to roll a large ball of snow and then build it up. He helped as the snowman gradually took shape and then helped hunt for twigs and stones for its face. Then he stood back and looked on as Sam put a scarf and hat on it. “It looks good,” he said. He looked at the snow for a moment and then bending down slightly picked up a huge armful and crept up behind Sam dumping the snow all over her.
Sam screamed with the unexpected coldness of it then turned round laughing. “You brat!” she said trying to get the snow out of her collar. “That was cold.”
Martouf grinned at her. “And that is a problem?” he asked. “It makes you a snow woman.”
Sam shook her head, flinging an armful of snow back at him.
He sidestepped quickly and scooped Sam up into his arms. “Now what?” he asked her.
Sam smiled at him. “Hot chocolate and marshmallows,” she said.
“Another tradition?” he asked.
Sam nodded. “Definitely.”
Twenty minutes later they sat on the floor in front of a roaring fire, their wet clothes hung up to dry, hands clasped round steaming mugs of cocoa. Martouf leaned back against the chair leg and sipped his drink. “It is good,” he said. “I have never had this before.”
Sam looked at him. “Really? It's an old joke here – save the Earth, It's the only planet with chocolate.”
Martouf smiled. “Then it is worth saving… and not just for the chocolate.” He shifted slightly and put his arm round Sam. She looked up at him and then leaned her head on his shoulder returning her gaze to the fire. She had two days to get to know this man before he had to go home to the other side of the galaxy and part of her wanted to take things slowly but part of her didn't want to waste a moment. She drank slowly and finally put the cup down.
Martouf put his cup down and looked at her. “You still feel cold Samantha,” he said.
She nodded. “I am a little.”
“Then let me warm you properly,” he said pulling her into his arms completely and kissing her.
Fin.
