The rain fell slowly but persistently over the graveside at Arlington . The officers in Air Force uniform stood silently as Lt Col Sam Carter read the eulogy in a broken voice for Gen Jack O'Neill, killed in a car accident, whist running late to work. So unfair. All those dangerous missions and he was killed on Earth on Friday 13th. Teal'c, Daniel and Jacob stood there, mourning the loss of a friend. General Hammond had come as well, as had the Vice President.
Jack sat up with a jump. That was the 4th time this week he'd had that nightmare. He glanced at the clock. Friday 13th and he was late for work. He tossed the covers back and got up. He headed for the shower, deciding to forgo shaving this morning. He was the boss and he decided that not shaving was fine.
He threw on the first clothes he found and drank the coffee quickly. Leaving the cup on the side he grabbed his keys and headed out the door in the pouring rain. He ran to the car and got in. Starting the engine he pulled off the driveway without looking and put his foot to the floor. He'd done this drive a thousand times. He knew the road blindfold.
Suddenly the car skidded. Jack fought for control and almost had it when the car hit something. It spun to one side and hit the railings. It teetered on the edge for a moment before plunging over the side of the cliff to the valley floor.
Several hours later Jack opened his eyes. It took him a moment to adjust to the bright lights above him then he focused in on a familiar face next to him. He struggled to pull the oxygen mask off his face. “Carter…”
Sam smiled. “Doc… he's awake!” she called. “Sir… how you feeling?”
Jack shook his head slightly. “What happened?”
“You crashed your car,” Sam said. “It's totalled Sir.”
“Ah,” Jack managed. “What did I hit? I hit something…”
Sam nodded looking up as the doc came over. “It was a jack rabbit.” She couldn't understand why he suddenly started laughing.
