Selmak looked at the amount of food SG1 were laying out on the table. She really didn't understand this at all. They had watched the parade that morning… lots of balloons and marching girls and music. Very pretty but she still didn't get the point. According to Jacob July 4 th was an important day… the day a piece of paper had been signed that meant he and his people were free from the tyranny of another country. Although no doubt the other side in the war would deny all claims of tyranny!

So they went to the parade with Sam and the other members of her team and then went back to Mark's house for a cookout. She looked at the food again. There were hamburgers, hotdogs, watermelon, potato chips and potato salad. There was also a lot of beer. She remembered the beer from a party back in March and was relieved it wasn't green this time!

She watched as Jack raised his glass and made some kind of speech and then watched as Jacob's grandchildren gave a speech entitled four score and seventy years ago… by why they had four fathers when she knew they only had one she couldn't work out.

Jacob laughingly explained that meant ancestors. Forefathers not four fathers. And that today was a day for celebrating their independence from all forms of tyranny. Not just from the British… who were now one of their biggest allies, but from every form of oppression.

Selmak's favourite part of the day was after dark when the fireworks lit up the night sky. Of course the first time the cannon's had launched the rockets she had instinctively and protectively taken control of her host and dove for cover. This caused much hilarity from the others and the grandchildren wanted to know why Grandad was hiding under the table and not watching the fireworks.

Jack and Sam looked at each other and smirked. Jack had expected Jacob to explain fireworks before they went off but Selmak's reaction was just too funny for words.

Jack hunkered down and offered her a hand out from under the table assuring her that war hadn't been declared and that it was quite safe to come out now. Then he cracked a comment about Jacob not getting out often enough and going senile in his old age.

Jacob had taken control back and laughed with them.  It was all he could think to do because Selmak feeling totally embarrassed had made him blush brightly.  While they all returned their attention to the fireworks, he tried to explain to Selmak that the fireworks wouldn't hurt her; it was just light and noise.

She knew the US troops had been called the rebels during the war of independence. So much like her own people were now. They too were fighting a war of independence that they might be free. She watched the red, white and blue lights soar and explode high in the sky and hoped one day it would be the Tok'ra celebrating their independence from the Goa'uld.
