Everything went wrong after the chicken broke his foot he decided. He was standing in front of the council feeling ridiculously nervous. It wasn't like it was his fault but it fell to him to at least start explaining.
"Well?" Garshaw demanded.
"It was the chicken's fault," he began.
Garshaw raised an eyebrow. "The chicken."
He nodded. "You see, things were going really well until the accident. Selmak was making the final arrangements when she tripped over the chicken, landing on it and breaking its leg."
Garshaw's eyebrow just got higher. Selmak's reputation as a klutz had gradually spread through the council although some still blamed her less than agile host. "Go on."
"Well of course once it's leg was broken it wasn't able to walk so we had to kill it."
Selmak took over. "And as one of Jacob's favourite meals is roast chicken I decided we'd cook it, along with a few more. Feed the villagers that kind of thing. How was I to know you don't eat chicken rare?" She shrugged. "Not my fault they all got food poisoning."
Garshaw looked at her. "Selmak the entire village got sick. Two of them died."
"I healed them."
"With a sarcophagus!"
"Could have left them dead."
Garshaw didn't reply but her eyebrow finally disappeared above her hair line.
"Or not," Selmak sighed. "So it's the chicken's fault for getting under my feet but I guess you will not taking that as an excuse then?"
A unanimous shaking of heads greeted her.
Selmak nodded resignedly. "So what's my punishment?"
Delek grinned wickedly. "You will learn how to cook chicken properly. Everyway possible and eat nothing but chicken for the next 100 years."
Selmak nodded. She left the council chambers, ignoring her host's complaints and went straight to the eating commons. She would share this experience with the rest of the base. Dinner for everyone every day. After all she'd neglected to say it wasn't just the one chicken she'd brought back with her. The village had been so grateful for her help in healing them; they had agreed to supply the base with a never ending supply of chickens. Along with many recipes. This was going to be such fun.
