Scintillate, scintillate
By Tels
The stars shone in the dark night sky and the smoke from the fire wound in a lazy spiral above their heads. Sam and Jacob were on watch while the rest of SG1 slept.
“Scintillate, scintillate globule vivific, fain would I fathom thy nature specific. Perched up above in thy ether capacious, strongly resembling a gem carbonaceous. Scintillate, scintillate globule vivific, fain would I fathom thy nature specific.”
Sam looked up from where she was poking the fire with a stick. "Dad?" she asked.
Jacob looked over at her. "Hmmm?" he asked, jerked out of his thoughts.
"You said something?”
Jacob shook his head. “I don't think so,” he answered. “At least I hadn't intended to,” he finished apologetically. “I was remembering when I used to go camping with your mom.”
Sam looked at him. “You and Mom went camping?”
Jacob smiled. “Every chance we got. We'd light a fire and make smores. Then we'd have the obligatory campfire songs.”
Sam laughed. “You sing?”
Jacob rolled his eyes. “I'll have you know your Mom loved my singing.”
“Even in the shower?”
“Especially in the shower.” Jacob laughed at the memory sharing with Selmak things he couldn't share with Sam.
Sam watched him in the firelight. “So that rhyme… what was it again?”
Jacob looked at her. “Scintillate, scintillate globule vivific, fain would I fathom thy nature specific. Perched up above in thy ether capacious, strongly resembling a gem carbonaceous. Scintillate, scintillate globule vivific, fain would I fathom thy nature specific.”
Sam nodded. “Yeah that one…”
Jacob smiled. “Your Mom would always sing that one. She'd lie on her back looking up at the stars and pick one.”
Sam looked puzzled. “But what does it mean?”
“And I thought you knew most things Sammie,” her father teased.
“Not that one… So what does it mean?”
Jacob tuned out Selmak's laughter as he recited the more familiar words to the rhyme. “Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you up. Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky. Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are.”
