Surprise

Jacob had been getting quieter Selmak decided. Only she didn't know why and didn't like to ask. They had been blended six weeks now and although the blending had been complete they were still adjusting to each other. But he seemed fine until the day before yesterday. There was no one she could ask either unless they returned to Earth and the council had made that impossible by wanting to send them on what they termed an orientation mission. She personally thought that was the most stupid idea they had ever come up with… well putting a snake like Delek in that gorgeous host aside. But that was somewhere her mind could no longer go.
Jacob just didn't share her opinion of good looking men. She'd even found him eyeing up some of the female Tok'ra. Not that he would ever go any further than just looking. She had never met anyone as devoted to a dead mate as her current host. Perhaps that was the problem. Maybe an anniversary coming up or something. But when she tried talking to him he backed off and asked her to leave it.
So she waited until he was asleep and then went and spoke to Malek, asking permission to return to Earth to speak to Samantha on a personal matter. Malek agreed so long as she returned before the council realised she was gone. He saw her to the rings and hoped that whatever she was planning would help Jacob.
Having spoken to Samantha she was surprised at what was really bothering Jacob. She hadn't worried about something like that for so many years now she hadn't really even given it much thought. But then she had much bigger problems to worry about now.
She woke Jacob up and they went to the bathing pools. This would take careful planning. Samantha had said she would organise things from that end. All Selmak had to do was get Jacob and a few of his friends there on the right day. She retreated into her private thoughts for a while trying to sort out the logistics of it.
Jacob noticed her withdraw and wondered if he had done something. He wasn't sure whether to approach her or not and decided not to. She was in her private space, didn't exactly have the do not disturb signs up but none the less he let her be. His mind went back over what had been bothering him for the past few days. He hadn't bothered Selmak with it because it probably wasn't a big thing in the grand scheme of things. It was his problem and he was the one having to deal with it.
After a while Selmak touched the mind of her host again. <I spoke to Malek> she began. <We have a date for this orientation mission.>
<Uh huh? The one you think is pointless?>
<Yeah… like you say we have both been doing this for years and know how to work as a team and take orders but it'll keep them happy. We gate out the day after tomorrow.>
<Oh…> Jacob's heart fell slightly. Still at least it would keep his mind off things he supposed. <Okay. Where are we going?>
<Some obscure planet, retrieve something and come home.>
Jacob nodded and let Selmak back in control for the council meeting they had to attend.
Selmak spent the next day making plans.
Jacob was really beginning to wonder if he had done something as every so often he'd find Selmak thinking something then she'd stop and change the subject of her thoughts. He reflected on how like Alison she was in that respect. He'd walk into a room when she was on the phone and there would be an instant of silence before she would change the subject. It was either him or a women thing … more likely to be him. Maybe he'd just made the wrong choice and they weren't compatible after all.
The following day, the day he had dreaded dawned. He didn't want to get up. Selmak made him get up, insisting they had to go on this mission. He didn't want to. Didn't want to do anything. He complained bitterly and asked if it were so wrong to have one day in the entire year when he could do what he wanted.
Selmak sighed. <Then what do you want to do today?> she asked.
<Nothing> he answered.
She nodded. <Very well. We go do this mission, then we come back here and you can bury your head in the sand for the rest of the day.>
Jacob nodded. He gave control to Selmak and pulled back as she got up and dressed. Then she headed to the rings. He stirred. <Where are we going?> he asked.
<Told you… this mission. It won't take long, but you have to be fore the whole time.>
Jacob sighed. <Alright.> He let Selmak punch in the address not taking notice of where they were going and then took control just before stepping through the gate.
As he stepped through into the other side he was showered with party poppers and a chorus of “Happy Birthday!” before Sam pulled him into a hug. “Happy birthday Dad,” she said.
He looked at her surprised.
She smiled. “Selmak was in on it,” she said before pulling him down the ramp to join the others.
<Selmak?> Jacob asked.
She laughed. <Your only 55 once> she laughed . <Sides wait til you reach 1900… that's old!>
